Description:
Social and mass media are lucrative sources of information that allow overcoming cross-cultural, inter-, and intra-cultural communication barriers. During the COVID-19 outbreak, social and mass media-initiated awareness campaigns and education while also portraying the virus as an imminent threat to humanity. This risk perception led to collective fear and panic that encouraged people to self-medicate. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the predictors of self-medication during the COVID-19 pandemic and assess the attributable role of social and mass media across thirteen countries.
